Tour overview

Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, located east of Arusha town about 51 kilometers driving from Arusha. The mountain lies within the Arusha National Park at an altitude of 4566 meters.

Meru has only one route to the summit, which can be completed in 3 days, but we strongly advise doing so for 4 days to allow for acclimatization. Prior to climbing Kilimanjaro, most alpine climbers acclimatize on Meru. Because of the volcanic eruption, there is less snow on the mountain. When climbing Mount Meru, unlike Kilimanjaro, you must be accompanied by an armed ranger(s) as you pass through the Arusha National Park. This is when you will be able to enjoy the walking safari as you drive by herds of African buffaloes, zebras, black and white colobus monkeys, and other wildlife.
