Tour overview

You will explore the Serengeti National Park and Lake Natron, which is located in the Masai settlement area, on this unique safari. Millions of waterbirds make the lake home, and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding places on the planet. The area surrounding Lake Natron is without a doubt one of Africa’s most gorgeous and unspoiled locations, making your safari really unique. The tour is available all year, however, we do not recommend visiting Lake Natron during the rainy season because the roads are often difficult. At Lake Natron, game drives are paired with a great lakeshore walk to witness flocks of flamingos up close.

Day 1: Arusha - Lake Natron

Your driver/guide will pick you up at your hotel in Arusha in the morning and drive for about 2 hours before leaving the main road. The ride will take you over bumpy paths, through remote Maasai areas with stunning views of the ‘mountain of God’ Ol Doinyo Lengai, and if you’re lucky you might even see some zebra’s, giraffe, or other wildlife.

The drive takes around 4-5 hours in total (you’ll stop for lunch) and once you arrive at the Lake Natron area entrance gate, a local Maasai guide will escort you to your accommodation. Visiting this whole area without a local guide is not allowed, so any excursion you do will be in his presence. You’ll check-in and have time to freshen up, after which you’ll head to the lake.

Accompanied by your local guide, you’ll explore the lake on foot. The ground is quite slippery and muddy, so be prepared to slowly slide over it to avoid falling. It’s very shallow for quite some time though, so it’s up to you to see how far you want to go to get close to the flamingos. We’ll stay until sunset, as this is the time when the flamingos are most active, looking for food. After the visit, you’ll return to your accommodation, where dinner will be served.

Day 2: Lake Natron - Serengeti National Park

The day starts early today, as we want to hike to a nearby waterfall before it gets too warm, and leave enough time to comfortably proceeding to Serengeti national park. The hike takes about 1 to 2 hours and takes you through the beautiful landscapes surrounding Lake Natron. Get ready to get wet, as you’ll have to cross the river a few times!

Once you finish your hike, you’ll continue north with a lunch box as the vehicle gently climbs along with multiple serpentine turns. Enjoy one last view at Lake Natron before departing the Rift Valley and continuing to the Northern Serengeti via the village of Wasso. Enter the Serengeti around late afternoon through Kleins Gate. Large herds of wildebeest can be seen crossing back to the southern plains between October and December. Lobo's constant springs and broad grass plains dotted with kopjes sustain a diverse range of resident game, including leopards, lions, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, and zebras. Proceed to your overnight lodging.

Day 3: Serengeti National Park

Spend the day seeing wildlife in the Seronera Valley after a leisurely morning drive to the Central Serengeti. Throughout the year, the Seronera Valley is home to a variety of species, including carnivores such as cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, and lions, as well as ungulates such as buffaloes, giraffes, hippopotami, impalas, topi, warthogs, and zebras. Following the sunset game drive, proceed to your campsite/lodge for dinner and stay.

Day 4: Serengeti - Arusha

Enjoy another game drive in Serengeti National Park before departing. You will check out and return to Arusha or the Seronera Airstrip for your departure. Back to Arusha, where the safari ends.
