Selous Game Reserve
Location and Getting There
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world. It is bigger than Rwanda and Burundi combined. It is a corridor for animal movements connecting Selous Game Reserve with the Niassa Game Reserve in Mozambique. It’s Savannah attracts the African wild dog, Nyasaland wildebeest, Cape buffalo, Selous zebras, Lichtenstein hartebeest, large groups of hippos, crocodiles, and huge herds of elephants.
Dry season (June-October) is the best time for game viewing. When it is dry, animals congregate around Selous’s rivers and lakes. Vegetation thins out during the dry season, making it easier to spot animals.
Attractions include boat safaris on the Rufiji River, birding, walking safaris, and fly-camping trips. Boating safaris set Selous apart from other national parks in Tanzania. It is also quieter than other Tanzanian national parks.
